There's nothing fancy about C & W Cafe, a red brick building on East 23rd Street. But this family owned business, owned by Carl and Willetta Hill, is where the magic happens at mealtime five days a week, drawing hundreds of customers for good times and captivating home-cooked soul food.
Carl, who is the head chef specializing in down home soul food cooking. He has been cooking since he was a child and still cooks some of the dishes that earned him merit badges when he was in the Boy Scouts. Willetta handles the day to day operations and is one of the friendly faces that greet you when you enter the cafe.
Ox tails, southern fried chicken, pot roast, chicken and dressing, barbecue ribs, fried fish, liver and onions, beef tips, chicken wings, ham hocks, pork chops, macaroni and cheese, turnip greens, collard greens, cabbage, fried corn, candied yams, pinto beans, green beans, black-eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, and cornbread muffins and foods an other delicious soul foods rotate on the menu. Each day, C & W Cafe features several meats and vegetables to choose from for a daily meal of one meat and two vegetables and we have homemade desserts.
